The curriculum director of Lafayette’s premiere jazz camp isn’t just any woodwind player. Legendary saxophonist and flutist Mary Fettig is a jazz and Latin music icon, whose resume includes gigs with Stan Kenton - she was the first woman to tour with his band - and Tito Puente, as well as the San Francisco Symphony, the pit orchestra for “Phantom of the Opera” and “Les Miz,” and on the soundtrack for “Ratatouille” and other movies, and “Sims” and “Star Wars” video games.
This San Francisco native was raised in Concord, and played marimba as well as woodwinds in her school music program. She had been at UCLA for two years when she joined the Stan Kenton Orchestra and went on a history-making tour. Since then she has toured with Flora Purim and Airto, Marian McPartland, Tito Puente, Toninho Horta, Joe Henderson and others. These days, she maintains a busy schedule teaching - both private lessons and as a member of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music faculty - recording and performing. Her latest CD is “Brazilian Footprints” (pictured above), which spent more than 20 weeks in Jazzweek’s top 50 world chart.
Fettig has been part of the Lafayette Summer Music Workshop since its very beginning, 11 years ago. She serves as woodwind instructor and curriculum director, ensuring that the jazz education received by these talented youths is top notch.
